Remco Evenepoel: the Belgian prodigy whose journey feels as much destiny as triumph. Born in 2000 in Aalst, Belgium, he was a standout athlete early on, excelling in youth football at Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven — even captaining Belgium’s youth sides. After being released from football at 17, he shifted his competitive fire to cycling and almost immediately began reshaping expectations.

By 2018, Evenepoel was sweeping junior titles, including both the time trial and road race at the UCI Junior World Championships. He turned pro in 2019 with Deceuninck–Quick‑Step, bypassing the usual U23 route, and quickly collected significant wins: Clásica San Sebastián, the European time trial title and silver at the World Time Trial Championships, all before most riders find their feet. Although a horrible crash in 2020 threatened to set his career back, he returned with renewed purpose.

Evenepoel’s defining moments came through in 2022 and 2023: winning Liège–Bastogne–Liège in solo fashion, winning the Vuelta a España (his first Grand Tour), and claiming the rainbow jersey at the World Championships.

Then came the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he made history. He first won gold in the individual time trial, and then, against all odds, snatched gold in the road race too — becoming the first male cyclist ever to win both the time trial and road race at the same Olympic Games. During the road race he overcame a dramatic puncture with just about 4 km remaining, changed bikes, and held off fierce chasers to cross the line solo under the watch of the Eiffel Tower.
